No one forces you now. I was talking in terms of future limitations. I was also speaking in the abstract, meaning any company to offer a service of this nature will "probably" impose some sort of restrictions to gouge money from the consumer. Again, speaking in future terms. Otherwise, what is the point of building some grand service if it has no advantage economically? Companies are out to make money.

it's a freemium service meant to make some people pay for extra storage and to buy music from amazon rather than itunes

Why is everyone complaining about the graphics card? The baseline option should not be an expensive card as not everyone needs that. And opposed to all other current macs, it can be upgraded when the machine is bought or even down the road. A better base line card would just mean an even higher base line price.

The Mac Pro looks like a really nice work station now in terms of processing power and, compared to the G5, also in terms of expandability of drives. It would be nice to have something with the processing power and pricing like the iMac and some expandability. However I guess Apple expects most people, who buy Mac Pros now, would buy these machines instead and this would mean much less profit for Apple. So it's unlikely to happen.

No, my point is they're not designed to be marketed and sold as cheap knock off that confuse customers.

Anyone can tell them apart, just from the bottom button alone if nothing else.

Irrelevant. Just because I stick a Ford logo on the hood doesn't mean I can make my new Mustang look like a Porsche Carrera clone.

Industrial design is legally protected work. And should be. It doesn't matter how you price your competing product.

Seeing as how the iPad 2 didn't get retina display, I doubt iMacs will.

    Imagine the cost of that!!

The GPU in the iPad 2 is powerful, but let's not go crazy here, it can't drive an x2 display and still get the same framerates. Heck, even on a PS3 most games don't really run at full 1080p because the graphics chip can't handle all the pixels.

On a mac though, it is different. The GPU is more than capable.

SI is superior in conversions only
Imperial is superior as I actually have a feel for the numbers

It's also easier in calculations - each unit is a derivative of the seven base units, each with a conversion factor of 1.

Yes, let's not change it because YOU actually have a feel for the numbers.

As for having a feel for the numbers, he's not alone. I have nearly 20 years of professional experience using Imperial units as a mechanical engineer, as does every mechanical engineer in the U.S. Switching systems (or, rather, making it mandatory) will require all of these engineers to re-learn the formulae they've known and used for decades. That's the equivalent of millions of man-years of engineering experience down the drain. That isn't progress, no matter how much you might want want to believe it is.

We need to switch to the metric system, what we have now is ****ing crazy when looking at the rest of the world...this is coming from a bio major who has to deal with SI units daily

    SI != metric.

I deal with both daily - our electrical system (Watts, Amperes, Volts, Ohms, etc.) are all metric and SI. Using Imperial units doesn't make understanding those SI units any harder.

For the love of your education system, do make the switch! I'm an engineering student from Canada. So I have to learn both imperial and SI. Imperial is such a pain in the ass.

I was an engineering student in the U.S., and I learned to use both systems - and yes, calculations using SI units were simpler. But the reality is that mechanical engineers here do not measure refrigeration in Watts, they use Btuh or tons of refrigeration. We don't use degrees Celsius, we use degrees Fahrenheit. We don't measure airflow in liters per second (which isn't even an SI unit; the proper convention would be cubic meters per second), we use cubic feet per minute. And as such, that's the system I've grown comfortable with as a professional.

Really, most opinions I see in the US to keep the imperial system is because you're not accustomed to it.

Which translates to an incredible cost of switching, and a near-certainty of an avalanche of errors.

...the difference between 37 and 38 degrees Celsius is 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, hardly a noticeable difference when it comes to weather forecasts.

You'd make a great point if weather forecasts were all we used temperature measurements for.

For chilled water, a 12 degree (F) temperature differential equates to 2 gpm per ton of refrigeration. Every mechanical engineer knows that. Force him to use SI units, and the game changes completely; calculations that could once be done in your head now require a calculator. You would achieve the opposite effect.

I'm not so sure. If a recipe calls for 2 tablespoons, is it not just as easy to measure out 30ml?

Measuring or counting out two is always easier than measuring or counting out thirty.

Are there really any benefits to the Customary scale, or do we just perceive benefits because it's what we're used to?

I don't know that there are benefits to using customary units; but there are indeed benefits to not switching units. Not the same thing.

Metric is just easier to learn. Period.

    That's one opinion. Period.

If it were so damn easy, everyone would know it, now, wouldn't they?

The more things that are in the cloud, the closer I get to hitting AT&T's 150GB home DSL (non-uverse) data limit.

I just dropped them for this very reason, went back to Brighthouse networks. 40Mbps no cap. :D

That's why they are, little by little, switching into the iOS experience... I'm quite inclined towards Lion being the last OS X version where the user will still be able to install applications on its own. The next one... I'm afraid... will be fully AppStore oriented... and that's when we will see the first jailbroken computers in history :D

No, there's some more time for that one. But trust me, in our lifetime, we will witness a true closed PC marketspace, for all OS's, not just Mac OS. But those devices won't be called PC's anymore. The entire industry will go there, not just Apple. In 15 years or so, our whole computing will be done on the cloud and we will only have consoles at home, not CPU's. Many things will change. So being afraid of it is in vain.

And Amazon thinks crippling ioS compatibility will be good business? FAIL.

I dont think so, Amazon cannot get the app needed for the streaming/storing of content on your phone or tablet approved in the appstore since. It violates apples terms, if you or anyone else has an issue with it, contact apple.

Amazon Cloud storage app on android scans you sd/local storage for music then allows you to upload it into the cloud. Apple for one wont let another mp3 store on its phones and for 2, apple wont let that service scan for music.

My thoughts exactly. Our school district (ISD 482) just bought 1,465 iPads for its students, and I can see us getting really mad if Apple were to release a new iPad 6 mos. later.

So how is that much different from them releasing new iPads 11 months later... like they just did? All the iPads in use didn't suddenly stop working.

Leopard (iChat integration with MSN Messenger:D )

I remember gettign the original unibody 15" MBP and feeling like i couldnt read text cause it was blurry and just off for lack of a better term.

I returned it (and no it was not for the screen, it was the portability) and got the 13" 2 years later, and I dont recall the same problem.

I also recently got the 4th gen ipod touch, and have just fallen in love with the screen, I have tried to look at my friends iphone, and my kids previous gen ipod touch, and they just don't look right. So while yes it may be overkill for the human eye it is appreciated. I suspect moreso on laptops and devices that are meant to be viewed at close range.

There are already multiple iPads.....18 of them to be exact. Why would u think Apple would want to add to this already rediculous number. This whole idea about a iPad pro line needs to stop. It doesn't make sense. It's only 2011. Want an iPad pro.....get an AIR.

    You mean 12.

Will this work on the 2011 mbp's?

    The seed note says:

    - Videos purchased from the iTunes Store will not play on Early 2011 MacBook Pro models.

To me, that means it can at least be installed on the new MacBook Pros.

They do actually call them Quarter Pounder's in Australia. And they insist on calling the chips 'fries' too!

Come to think of it isn't it a bit odd that Americans attribute 'fries' to the French, but refuse to adopt their metric system? Go figure.

Well they are not really french:

+1. My IP is being logged right now most likely. No matter where you go, using any communication device, you can be tracked. If you're that paranoid, get off the grid. Every phone company tracks your location. This for iPhone users is just a log of it on your phone.

I do agree, however, that the consolidated.db file should at least be encrypted if it is to remain on the device. Now any good crook knows all they need is your iphone to find out when best to rob you.

Exactly. I don't know why everybody is all fired up about this. If you aren't a criminal, you have nothing to worry about. If you are, then you are probably bright enough to use a burn phone. :p
